HOW VISION WORKS
How Your Eye Focuses Light
To see clearly, light rays must bend—a process called refraction—so they focus directly onto the retina (the light-sensitive layer at the back of your eye). Your cornea (the clear, dome-shaped front window of your eye) performs about two-thirds of this focusing work, while the natural lens inside handles the rest. When your cornea is slightly too steep, too flat, or unevenly curved, light cannot focus sharply. LASIK gently reshapes this front surface so light lands exactly where it belongs.

HOW VISION WORKS & HOW LASIK HELPSDistance Blur
1. Why Vision Is Blurred
In nearsightedness (myopia), close objects look clear, but distant objects appear blurry. This happens when the cornea (the clear front dome of your eye) curves too steeply, or the eyeball is slightly longer than normal. Light bends too much and focuses in front of the retina instead of right on it, causing distance vision to blur.
2. How Custom LASIK Corrects It
Guided by a 3D digital map of your eye, our cool laser gently flattens the center of your cornea by microscopic amounts. This moves the focus point backward directly onto your retina, giving you crisp, natural distance vision without glasses or contacts.

PRE-SURGICAL SAFETY & MAPPING
Corneal Topography & 3D Pentacam® Mapping
Before surgery is ever scheduled, Dr. Marano and Dr. Raouf create a detailed 3D digital map of your cornea (the clear front dome of your eye), capturing 25,000 distinct surface measurements. This in-depth screening examines both the front and back surfaces to ensure your cornea is thick, healthy, and ideal for laser treatment—protecting your safety before you ever enter the laser suite.

How CustomVue® LASIK Corrects Astigmatism in 3D
Astigmatism means your cornea curves unevenly like a football instead of a symmetrical basketball, warping light rays into multiple blurry focal points.

How CustomVue® Treats Astigmatism
🏈
The Astigmatic Cornea (Football Shape)
Notice the red and orange "bowtie" pattern on the 3D map. Light passing through the steeper vertical curve focuses at a different point than light passing through the flatter horizontal curve, causing ghosting, halos, and distorted edges.

CustomVue® Wavefront Smoothing (Basketball Shape)
Unlike standard LASIK that applies an average stencil, CustomVue® measures over 1,200 optical coordinates. The cool excimer beam vaporizes microscopic imperfections along the steep meridian, equalizing the surface into a uniform optical dome.

Dr. Matthew Marano, MDBoard-Certified LASIK Surgeon • Marano Eye Care
“Astigmatism is simply an uneven curve. With 3D WaveScan® diagnostics and CustomVue® wavefront guidance, we map each patient’s optical fingerprint 25 times more accurately than glasses or contacts. We don't just treat astigmatism, we eliminate the microscopic irregularities that cause night glare, targeting standard-setting 20/20 and unlocking the possibility of 20/15 high-definition vision.”

HOW EYE SURGERY EVOLVED
The Evolution of LASIK: Blades to Cool Lasers
Corrective eye surgery has transformed over the past five decades. What once required manual hand-held blades with wide margins of error is now performed with computerized, cool laser beams operating with microscopic accuracy:
1970s • PRE-LASER ERA
1970s: Manual Steel Blades (Radial Keratotomy)
Before lasers existed, surgeons used tiny hand-held diamond blades to make manual spokelike cuts into the cornea. Because blade depth depended entirely on manual hand pressure, healing was unpredictable, and patients frequently suffered nighttime glare, halos, and fluctuating vision.
METHOD: Manual Blade Cuts (High Variability)
1980s–1990s • COOL LASER REVOLUTION
1980s–1990s: The First Heat-Free Surface Lasers (PRK)
Scientists discovered that a special type of cool ultraviolet laser light could reshape the surface of the cornea without using heat. Unlike hot surgical lasers that burn or cauterize tissue, this cool light gently separates microscopic tissue bonds pulse by pulse, allowing the surface to heal cleanly.
METHOD: Microscopic Laser Precision (No Heat)
2000s–PRESENT • BLADE-FREE CUSTOM LASIK
Modern Era: 100% Blade-Free Custom Dual-Laser Suites
Modern LASIK combines two synchronized lasers: an ultra-fast cool laser creates a thin, protective flap on the cornea in about 10 seconds—no blades ever touch your eye. Then, a custom mapping laser gently reshapes the surface beneath it, guided by your eye's unique 3D blueprint.
METHOD: 100% Blade-Free • Rapid 24-Hour Recovery
THE TECHNOLOGY BEHIND CUSTOM LASIK
Inside the CustomVue® Suite: 4 Integrated Systems
A traditional eye exam relies on subjective questions (“Which lens looks clearer, 1 or 2?”) to find a general glasses prescription. CustomVue® replaces guesswork with an objective 3D digital scan that measures your eye with 25 times more detail than a standard glasses test. Here are the four key systems that make this possible:
STEP 1: 3D MAPPING25× Finer Detail
WaveScan® Digital 3D Eye Mapping
Like a fingerprint, no two eyes are identical. WaveScan sends a harmless beam of light into your eye and tracks how it bounces back through 240 tiny sensors. This creates a detailed 3D optical map of your unique eye, identifying subtle imperfections that glasses and contacts can never fix.
✦ Personalized Optical Map: Measures your eye with 25 times greater precision than a standard glasses test.
✦ Direct Digital Guide: Transmits your personalized 3D vision map straight to the surgical laser for pinpoint accuracy.
STEP 2: EYE TRACKINGActive Motion Tracking
3D Iris Tracking & Motion Alignment
When you lie down for surgery, your eye naturally rotates slightly (a movement called cyclotorsion). Our 3D Iris Registration recognizes the unique patterns of your iris (the colored part of your eye) and automatically adjusts the laser so every pulse lands in the exact right spot.
✦ Real-Time Movement Tracking: Follows microscopic eye movements 60 times every second to maintain perfect alignment.
✦ Instant Auto-Pause: If you cough, sneeze, or look away, the laser automatically pauses instantly—and resumes only when you are centered again.
STEP 3: PROTECTIVE FLAP100% Blade-Free
iFS® Blade-Free Laser Flap Creation
Some older or discount centers still use an oscillating metal razor blade (a microkeratome) to prepare the eye. At Marano Eye Care, we are strictly 100% blade-free. Our computer-guided laser uses microscopic light pulses to prepare a smooth, paper-thin protective flap in just 10 painless seconds.
✦ Natural Beveled Edges: The edges fit together like a puzzle piece, helping the flap lock securely back in place.
✦ Rapid Natural Healing: The flap reseals naturally within minutes without needles, stitches, or bandages.
STEP 4: GENTLE RESHAPINGGentle Cool Light
STAR S4 IR® Cool Light Reshaping
Our reshaping laser uses a specialized beam of cool ultraviolet light. Because it produces no heat, it does not burn or harm surrounding tissue. Each tiny pulse gently removes a microscopic fraction of a tissue layer (about 1/200th the thickness of a human hair) in just seconds.
✦ Smooth Transition Zones: Blends the treated area smoothly into the rest of your cornea to maintain natural contrast and night vision.
✦ Fast 10-Second Treatment: Reshapes the cornea in seconds, keeping your eye comfortable and speeding up recovery.
